our objective is to turn the UNCG storage warehouse into an condo complex complied of loft living quarters. the idea is to take old unused industrial warehouses into affordable dwellings for first time home owners.

the overall concept of our space design is based on the community center within the space. we wanted it to be the life force of our space. it is the heart. each unit is like an organ that only thrives off the social aspects of life. we saw these new home owners to be young citizens venturing into the workforce for the first time, people who thrive on community.

our plan is centralized around the community center [heart], and moves outward from there the pathways connect all the units together. each unit contains a patio space which opens up to neighbors for an added push towards community. i guess you could say we created utopia in a box.

the below image is an aerial view of the space.

the overall idea is to create a vineyard type space keeping the overhead beams and punching through the middle of them to expose the outside. the units however would keep the ceiling except where the loft punches through. since the space is sustainable we wanted to take the remaining concrete that is replaced by grass to be broken down and reused to fabricate the walls of the units, in some since we are giving back to the earth and reusing what we take away from the building and not just throwing it away.

a place to bathe: exempt of confinement

The concept behind my place to bathe is "exempt of confinement"; relating to the wants of clients who may be confined to a wheelchair permanently or temporarily. The entire space of the spa is relatively open, with no walls that are completely connected that give the space a feeling of openess and freedom. The spa is aimed at providing a place for the cleansing of mind and body, which is truly the only way to gain complete relaxtion and completeness. Spirituality, nutrition, exercise, herbalism, and hydrotherapy will all be offered as a way to achieve the level of relaxtion that the spa was designed to provide.

Phase 1 in our project of designing "a place to bathe" is design research. The culture that I chose to research in their bathing techniques is that of Sebastian Kneipp: German. Germany has a long history of spas and wellness. The Romans appreciated the hot mineral springs at Baden-Baden, and beginning in the 18th and 19th centuries, Europe’s royalty and other aristocrats would meet at the great German spa resort towns. Today, there are over 900 "Spa Resorts" found in Germany, and most for a fraction of the cost found in the United States. Sebastian Kneipp's was a founding father of Naturopathic Medicine, and his "Kneipp Cure" lives on today. This "Cure" is a form of hydrotherapy, a system of healing involving the application of water through various methods, temperatures and pressures. Along with the Naturopathic movement, Kneipp believed that healing must be achieved in five steps: Hydrotherapy, Herbalism, Exercise, Nutrition, and Spirtuality. To some extent, I agree that all five are important for a more sound body and mind achievement, which is what I think spa/water treatments should be able to provide to clients. Today in Germany, the "Spa Scene" is far more relaxed than other destinations in the world concerning nudity/privacy which are both aspects of the culture that I may not incorporate in my design of a place to bathe.

Design Manifesto

I drew inspiration from the abstract expressionism movement and from artists such as Jackson Pollock when creating my design manifesto. I believe that design comes from one's expression of self, and is therefore reflective on how we feel. My painting expresses my frustration with the idea of comformity and is a testament itself of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". For me, painting abstractly brings great joy and is truly a way of expressing myself.

Our experience with the various requirements to support human activities and needs concerning our shelter:bus was challenging. Although we, as a group, thought that we had designed our buses thoughtfully, the “codes +” charrette proved differently.

What we would recommend to other designers when creating a space in which humans will interact with, is to pay close attention to every detail, large and small, to ensure that the experience one will have with the space will not only be enjoyable, but equally accessible for all. For example, when considering a space for an individual who may be in a wheelchair, you need not only think about the space it will take to enter the room, but also the dimensions for turning around, turning around an object, backing up, and approaching the space horizontally and vertically. These considerations, unfortunately, were not thought of when designing our prototype shelter:bus. The codes that need be applied to most every space are very helpful in further considering your design and its impact on those we will interact with it. For example, when sitting at a desk you must think of how much clearance an average person would need and also how much someone who is not average would need and combine the two. The codes really helped us, as a group, to look at every inch of our space differently.

The overall experience with the “codes +” charrette was difficult at first but was very helpful in the end. The regulations and requirements to support human activities is something that will enhance our designing capabilities because they really taught us to not only look at our space in our shelter:bus completely different, but also that we must always consider who we are designing for in order to have a successful and welcoming design.

For our shelter:bus, we decided that one of the most important and basic needs is water. Therefore, our relief bus is dedicated solely to need. The bus will have a retractable, slanted "rain-roof" that will channel rainwater into collapsible barrels. From there, basic water refinement treatments will be done, such as the addition of iodine to the water, in order to ensure the safety of the water. The bus will also have a "water bladder" on the second floor that will store pre-treated water and can be siphoned into the barrels. Large, re-usable plastic bottles will be given to the victims in need so that they can take water as they please and have it stored safely. If for some reason water is not easily accessible for the shelter:bus, the hose from the bladder can attach to any working fire hydrant.

For our second shelter:bus, we decided that medical supplies would also be in demand in the case of a natural disaster. This medical bus will have six sleeping quarters on the second floor, a cellular communication center on the first, handicap access, MRE's, and of course, medical supplies. The bus will also be ran off of solar power, to ensure that no additional environmental impact is placed during the, already disastrous, location. Heavy-duty tires will also be utilized to ensure that debris will not interfere with the mission of the shelter:bus.

For our client, we chose the people of the Kobeni village in Mauritania, West Africa. The people of this viallge have been suffering from locust infestation, drought, famine, sand storms, and governmental problems for years now. Our proposed ideas to help the Kobeni people were to improve their granary storage, market place, create a waiting room for their local medical unit, and to create a cover for the community well that will help reduce contamination and will keep animals, debris, and even people from falling in. The drawings above are images that are representative of the current issues that are plaguing the people of the Kobeni Village.

Our final model for the proposed bus site on the corner of Tate St. and Spring Garden St. has a natural, organic, welcoming feel that will be comfortable and familiar for future passengers on the GTA/HEAT Bus. The horizontal band of green on both sides of the shelter represent recycled glass that will be used to tie in the stone on the facade of the Weatherspoon Art Museum that is directly behind our location. The roof will have slats of wood that will also keep with the verticality of Museum as well. Inside the bus stop will be soft music from the Museum, as well as informational sheets concerning the upcoming events at Weatherspoon and a map of the route of the Bus.

My name is Hannah Hall and I am a second year IARC student here at UNCG. I wanted to thank you, first and foremost, for speaking to all of us last Wednesday on behalf of the Environmental and Sustainability Committee at UNCG. Because of your speech, I feel not only relieved that actions are being taken to help protect our environment, but also sincerely hopeful for a future filled with change. Just a few of the topics that you discussed that I am excited about include: portion control and organic produce in the cafeteria; films concerning the environment in the Weatherspoon Museum; $136,578 saved by re-using and recycling; the 34% recycling rate that is the highest so far; and the conversion of vegetable into Bio-Fuel thanks to Piedmont Bio-Fuel. For our the precedent part of our project, we visited the bus stop that is currently on campus on Spring Garden St. We were given a list of 15 word pairs to help guide us in what we should be looking for when viewing the bus stop and sketching. My five words that coincide with my pictures, in order from top to bottom, are "circulation + use", "tectonic + mechanic", "symmetry + balance", and "geometry + arrangement".

After we completed our sketches, we began working on study models to express our ideas for the next phase of the project which was to design a bus stop for the GTA Route 2 stop at the corner of Tate St. and Spring Garden.

After a week of wayfinding, I must admit that when we were first assigned this project I was a bit irritated that we had to, again, use some form of transportation and that it would be foreign to the majority of us this time. Once I started on this “adventure”, however, I soon realized how thankful I am to live on campus and to have a car.
I had heard, the day before, that you could take the HEAT Bus to the actual bus depot downtown and pick your route from there. Because I’m impatient, and apparently not very smart, I got on the first HEAT Bus that I saw on the morning of my riding and hoped that it would take me where I wanted to go. Needless to say, I sat for 30 minutes while the bus driver drove his route on and around campus until I was dropped off in the exact same place I started. After feeling extremely embarrassed and a bit frustrated, I decided just to drive to the depot. Although I felt that getting in my car and driving was completely defeating the entire process, by driving I knew that I would definitely get there and would be able to complete the assignment. The very moment I arrived at the depot and saw the classic wooden benches with people and their luggage that you see in various movies, I felt like I was a child running away. I was disoriented and slightly overwhelmed, but I eventually found the pamphlets that had the bus routes in them and decided to go to Friendly Shopping Center. It was humorous to me, and I’m sure to the other passengers on the bus, how foreign the experience was for me and my classmates. We had no idea where to put our change when we got on or when to pull the yellow rope that requests a stop. Also, because we were taking pictures rapidly, I’m pretty sure the passengers thought we were crazy tourists or snotty, privileged young adults, and that made me feel a bit uncomfortable and almost undeserving or unwelcome to ride the bus. The night before my riding, the 6-o-clock news did a segment on how starting on a certain date, it will become a law that the GTA must have at least six cameras running 24/7 for the safety of its passengers. As I was riding at 11 am, I could definitely see how fights could get started or how women, especially, could feel unsafe.
I, unfortunately, did not read the civil rights reading on blackboard before I began my “Three R’s” project. I have, however, read several informational sources in the past regarding civil rights in Greensboro and have done various projects on historical events such as the famous Sit-In at the Woolsworth downtown so I was not completely unaware of what was in the reading. After I completed the reading, the project came full circle for me. In the end, I can say that I highly respect those that use and work for the public transportation system. Never again will I curse at a GTA Bus when I get stopped one while I’m driving…

First week...

Before the first day of classes actually started, I was a little nervous about my second year as an Interior Architecture student. It seemed that from the very beginning of my first year in the major there was a consensus among 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th year students that your second year in the program is the one that will either make or break you. Although I can't say how I will feel at the end of the spring semester, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by my first week of studio.

Our first project assigned, on Monday, asked us to make a map of our journey to a certain destination, previously chosen by our teachers, by sketching and recording areas that stood out to us. After we had completed this and shared our individual "paths" with the class as a whole, we broke into our suit groups that consisted of roughly 15 people to work on the second part of the project which was to figure out a way to combine our paths in a legible and cohesive manner. I was worried that working as a group would be incredibly frustrating and that some of us would end up creating something that we didn't fully stand behind. I was very happy, however, when our group was extremely open to other's ideas and willing to hear every voice of the group and that in the end we were able to reach an agreement that we could all be excited about (which definitely helps in regards to the quality of our work). After we presented our work as a group to the rest of the class, the final part of the project was given to us with a time frame attached. We, the entire class, had roughly an hour and a half to decide how to combine four group's work now. Although I expected it to be hectic, I was disappointed in those who did not take the assignment seriously. I'm glad that we were all forced to work together, however, because this was just a small taste of what the real world is going to be like (and we definitely all need that). In the end, the final piece of work was not what everyone agreed on but instead a final attempt at completing something before our time ran out.

This first week flew by and if it's any taste of what the rest of the semester is going to be like, I can say that I am honestly excited for what is to come.

For our first project in studio this year, we were assigned to take note of landmarks, nodes, edges, and districts along our journey to our destination. My destination for this assignment was the Beth David Synagogue off of Friendly Avenue. Along the way I sketched certain objects and areas that, to me, help identify the path that I am on. At the end of my journey, I realized how many objects you subconsciously see on a daily basis but fail to realize how big of a part they play in your navigation. I really enjoyed this assignment; I will definitely pay more attention to an area's layout now!

The overall concept for our Time Capsule is that our project represents the support that studio gives us, as first year students, in our ideas and creativity similar in the way an easel supports a piece of art work in progress. Since the first floor of the Gatewood Building has no hint as to what the upper levels floors look like, we wanted to bring some aesthetic qualities of studio to the entry level of the building. Materials to be used are yellow pine, painted steel and galvanized bolts, which all follow the manner in which the upper levels of studio are styled in. The location for this time capsule piece would be to the right of the elevator in the corner, on the first floor. A TV or digital projector will display photos, videos, and slideshows of our five years in the Interior Architecture program. For the remainder of the 15 years, after we graduate and until the time capsule is "opened", work from Alumni can be played along with promotional IAR media.

Design Research: 10 Interiors

I really enjoy the eccentricity of this room. Upon first glance, it appeared to be some sort of a library due to the amount of objects in the room and the spiraling staircase found on the right side of the room. After examining the room closer, however, it is evident that this interior space is nothing more than a seating area. The fireplace and the neutral furniture really add to the space and the various works of art on the wall, somehow, refrain from taking away from the overall vibe.

The aspect of this room that I like the most is the simplicity of the overall design. "Less is more" really comes into play in a room like this. The varying patterns used throughout the room, surprisingly, are appealing to me. Also, the color scheme throughout the room (mainly black and white with subtle uses of color) really make the room inviting. The only thing that I do not like, however, is the lack of "grounding" that the picture on the main wall has.

This room, to me, is the ideal little girl's room. However, it also has a very adult, sophisticated feel with a slight French influence. I really like how all of the patterns in the room work with each other to achieve an overall successful design style. The painting above the bed, to me, truly adds that certain "something" that pulls the room together, along with the finishing touch of the chandelier.

Upon first glance, I thought that I really liked the overall design of this room. However, as I looked at it closer I realized that the excess of furniture really distracts me. I love the colors in the room, but I'm not sure about the choice of accessories. For example, I really don't care for the orbital-looking piece of art on the right side of the room and the curtains are far more traditional than the rest of the room. Perhaps with a larger variety of furniture, in smaller quantity, the room would have a more unique feel.

This room reminds me of the Gatewood Arts Building in that it utilizes raw materials and is overall simplistic in design. The entire room seems to be vertically oriented, which is very appealing to me. I also enjoy the installation of wood in the center-point of the room, because I think it grounds the room and adds that "something" special. Also, the furniture in the room, admittedly, is relatively sparse but has been chosen by the designer appropriately.

This oriental-inspired room is one of the ten rooms that I really enjoyed because of the simplicity. Contrasting to the room above this picture, this Asian room is horizontally oriented but is still simplistic. The photography, virtually unmentioned in the other rooms I viewed, really had an impact in the end result of this design. The blue coloring at the very end of the room really forces your eyes to travel throughout the room, as you would if you were physically interacting with it.

Although I was sure that I would love this room, I really began to dislike it because of the colors and furniture. For one thing, the room is too symmetrical: one chair, one couch, and random accessories are on either side of the room and are divided by a really odd coffee table. To me, the style of the room feels like traditional, classic meets the 1980's in a really bad way. The color on the wall, the furniture covering, and the accessories all seem to be a very cheap.

I really love this dining room. The unusual placement of the pictures above eye level really adds to the overall design. The colors used in the room are relatively neutral, allowing for the small, unique touches of the design to really shine through. Although the room is one of formal gatherings, the styling of the room gives it a classy feel while staying somewhat casual.

This is my least favorite room of all of the ones that I examined. For some people, perhaps, the busyness in the room is exciting and adds to their senses. For me, however, all of the furniture, colors, patterns, accessories, etc. do nothing but distract me. I appreciate the materials, such as the wood, in the room but I do not like the combination of various, random materials (such as the marriage between wood and iron in the table).

This room is by far my favorite. The art work on the main wall really grounds the room. The furnitue is simplistic in the room but unique in its own right. None of the accessories in the room take away from the design; they only add to it. The patterns in the room (the rug, chair, and painting) all seem to work together to really make this room special. The colors, as well, work relatively well together and create an overall appealing room.

Design Research: 10 Designers

1. Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, who chose to be known as Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-born architect and writer who is famous for his contributions to what now is called Modern Architecture. He became a French citizen in his 30’s, and lived from October 6th, 1887 to August 27th, 1965. He was a pioneer in theoretical studies of modern design and was dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities. His career spanned five decades, with his iconic buildings constructed throughout central Europe, India, Russia, and one structure each in North and South America. He was also an urban planner, painter, sculpture, writer, and modern furniture designer.

2. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who was born Maria Ludwig Michael Mies, was a German-born American architect. He is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. Like many of his post WWI contemporaries, he sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential 20th century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. His “skin and bones” approach to architecture led to a style of minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. He lived from March 27th, 1886 to August 17th, 1969.

3. Charles and Ray Eames were modern furniture designers in the 1950’s who pioneered innovative technologies, such as figerglass and plastic resin chairs and the wire mesh chairs designed for Herman Miller. Besides this work, Charles and Ray Eames channeled their interest of photography into the production of short films (Traveling Boy, 1950 and Powers of Ten, 1977). Charles lived from June 17th, 1907 to August 21st, 1978 and Ray lived from December 15th, 1912 to August 21st, 1988. Both were responsible for many classic, ionic designs of the 20th century.

4. Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer who was sometimes referred to as the “Father of Modernism” in the Nordic countries. His work includes architecture, furniture, and glassware. Although sometimes regarded as the first and the most influential architect of Nordic Modernism, a closer examination of the historical facts reveals how Aalto closely followed and had personal contacts with other pioneers in Sweden. What they and many others of that generation in the Nordic countries had in common was that they had started off from classical education and were first designing in the so-called Nordic Classicism styles before moving, in the late 1920’s, towards Modernism.

5. Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect and designer who was exemplar of the Danish Modern style. Among his architectural achievements are St. Catherine’s College, Oxford; Merton College, Oxford; Radisson SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen; and the Danish National Bank building in Copenhagen. Jacobsen has created a number of highly original chairs, such as the Egg and Ant Chairs, and other furniture. He received several international distinctions and medals for his achievements. He lived from February 11th, 1902 to March 24th, 1971.

6. Verner Panton is considered one of Denmark’s most influential 20th century furniture and interior designer. During his career, he created innovative and futuristic designs in a variety of materials, especially plastics, and in vibrant colors. His style was very 1960’s but regained popularity at the end of the 20th century. As of 2004, Panton’s most well-known furniture models, such as the Stacking Chair, are still in production. He also became well-known for his collapsible house in 1955, the Cardboard House and the Plastic House in 1960. He lived from February 13th, 1926 to September 5th, 1998.

7. Walter Adolph George Gropius (May 18, 1883 – July 5, 1969) was a German architect and founder of Bauhaus. Along with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, he is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of "modern" architecture. In 1923, Gropius aided by Gareth Steele, designed his famous door handles, now considered an icon of 20th century design and often listed as one of the most influential designs to emerge from the Bauhaus. He also designed large scale housing projects in Berlin, Karlsruhe and Dessau from 1926-32 that were major contributions to the New Objectivity movement.

8. Henry Van de Velde was a Belgian painter, architect and interior designer. Together with Victor Horta he can be considered one of the main founders and representatives of Art Nouveau in Belgium. Van de Velde spent the most important part of his career in Germany and had a decisive influence on German architecture and design at the beginning of the 20th-century. Van de Velde studied painting in Antwerp, under Charles Verlat and in Paris under Carolus-Duran. As a young painter he was thoroughly influenced by Paul Signac and Georges Seurat and soon adopted a neo-impressionist style. In 1889 he became a member of the Brussels-based artist group "Les XX". After Vincent Van Gogh exhibited some work on the yearly exhibition of Les XX van de Velde became one of the first artists to be influenced by the Dutch painter. During this periode he developed a lasting friendship with the painter Théo van Rysselberghe and the sculptor Constantin Meunier. He lived from April 3rd, 1863 to October 25th, 1957.

9. Eero Saarinen was a Finnish American architect and product designer of the 20th century famous for varying his style according to the demands of the project: simple, sweeping, arching structural curves or machine-like rationalism. Saarinen first received critical recognition while still working for his father, for a chair designed together with Charles Eames for the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition in 1940, for which they received first prize. This chair, like all other Saarinen chairs was taken into production by the Knoll furniture company, founded by the Saarinen family friend Florence (Schust) Knoll together with her husband Hans Knoll. Further attention came while Saarinen was still working for his father, when he took first prize in the 1948 competition for the design of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, St. Louis, not completed until the 1960s. The competition award was mistakenly sent to his — at that time more renowned — father. He lived from August 20th, 1910 to September 1st, 1961.

10. Harry Bertoia was an Italian-born artist and modern furniture designer. In 1950, he moved to Pennsylvania to establish a studio and to work with Hans and Florence Knoll. During this period he designed five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll. Among them was the famous “Diamond Chair” which was a fluid, sculptural form made from a molded lattice work of welded steel. In Bertoia’s own words, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.” Harry Bertoia lived from March 10th, 1915 to November 6th, 1978.

New Design Technologies

One of the newest technologies to be utilized in residential construction is the use of simple composite materials for walls and roofs. Previously, this material had been available to only automobile and airplane construction due to the cost of the product. Fortunately, because of the recent demand for durable buildings in the west more specifically, this simple composite material has been dramatically lowered in price and is now more available to the general public. This material stays in one piece during earthquakes and any other event that may potentially disrupt the building environment. The material is attractive and can actually prevent mold and termite infestation. It is also safe, and highly energy efficient in reducing heating and cooling bills by 1/2 to 2/3 and are also environmentally smart because they reduce the need for steel and wood. In terms of architectural style, the material matches regional expectations and are adequate in fire safety.

Another technology recently created, and still being tested, is CSIP. Cement filled structure panels will reduce constrcution time, cost and overall operating cost in the long run. They are currently being tested for energy efficiency, structural strength, and hurricane/earthquake/natural disaster resistance. If passed, they will be used in multi story buildings to help with structural strength and cost.

The resource page, however, were impressive as they had numerous industrial briefs. Overall it is a website that I would go to for a specific need, instead of viewing for sheer inspiration.

I was impressed with this website at first glance because of the bright colors and enticing interactive technology found on the site. They also had a very nice portfolio that displayed their work. The design style of this company appeared to be somewhat influenced by Art-Deco because of the clean, geometric lines and intentional locations of color.

This website was similar to the builderspace site in the way of their usage of color and text. They did have good blogs and a nice amount of information that can be easily located on their site. They have adequate listings for their competition, blogs, directory, events, news, forums, and library.

Although this website had a really nice use of color, they only had one example for each of their projects in their portfolio. This added up to only 15 photos for an entire website made specifically for showcasing and enticing potential clients. Brain Forest is a graphic design website that appears to be user/people friendly, but they their porfolio pictures that are displayed on the website shuffle too quickly for the viewer to be able to really get an idea of the company's style.

This website had a completely different mood than the others that I visited on my research venture. The colors were very dark and rich and were joined with a somewhat classic yet bohemian style. Although the design style of this company was interesting and unqiue, their portfolio was a bit on the sparse side. They also display a cover of Good Housekeeping that they were in, as if to show their credentials, but they should show other examples than just that.

However, their website was really dark and seemed to lack the certain amount of "light" that viewers would be drawn to. His entire website made it very clear that he deals with correctly designing structures based on the geography and culture of the area that the building will be created. He seems to take in to consideration the regional and geographical limitations that one may be faced with when building a house. This week in our drawing class, we learned different methods of shading. Crosshatch, diagonal, random, and smudging are all methods that we learned could enhance our drawings and could highlight the quality of our drawing. I tried to use crosshatching on my egg project and smudging on the other composition.

In my final project, I really tried to combine equal parts of Heather and Hannah's projects. They were similar to begin with, but in their own unique ways. This wasn't an easy task, however. As Jake had mentioned to us before, the more different two objects are the easier it is to morph them together.

The first photos are of Heather Link's pencil box project. I really loved how she had a designated space for each pencil, so I tried to replicate that same quality in mine. Hannah's memory project was similar in the way that she had specific areas for her individual objects of her project. I made a second pencil box, but similar to the shape of Hannah's memory project's design.

Portrait Project

For my portrait project, I chose to really make it more than just another assignment. I have a lot of doubt in myself when it comes to drawing, and actually all art in general. Jake suggested that I throw my fear out the "window" and just draw. I suddenly realized that not everything I make has to be perfect in my eyes, and that if it comes from me it is still something that no one can replicate (however valuable that may be). For this project, therefore, I made myself draw 25 portraits of myself without looking in the mirror. I wanted to capture how I viewed myself from the inside. On the first half of them, I did not pick my pencil up from the page and forced myself to just keep drawing. Surprisingly, for the final project I chose the 8 that I thought were the worst and chose to display them. In all, this project really made me re-evaluate myself.

Memory Box

My memory box was a representation of a memory that I have of my sister when she was younger. It was the first time that she had completely gotten into a body of water, and she accidentally slipped off of a rock that marked a severe drop off in the pond we were swimming in. I, of course, felt completely responsible because I knew of the rock and of its significance but I failed to inform my sister. Ever since then, I have felt extremely protective over my sister, as if to make up for my lack of attention during the previous situation. My box, therefore, is a representation of my protectiveness for my sister that I have today. The larger box symbolizes me, as there is a smaller box (my sister) inside that cannot go beyond the larger box's limit. The smaller box can move freely within the larger box and can be exposed to those viewing it. However, at a moment's notice the two open sides of the cube can be closed to completely protect the smaller box. This was my favorite project so far.

In Patrick's 222 class, we have been assigned to draw 50 chairs and place them on note cards for an eventual test at the end of the semester. These "dreaded" cards turned out to be quite enjoyable, so I wanted to study chairs, again, for my zine. Some of these chairs are, in fact, replications of the original models that we were assigned in 222 but others are completely new, radical designs that I enjoyed as well.

This layout was one of my favorite assignments so far for our drawing class because it really allowed us to display our view of what studio is like. For me, I didn't focus much on the academic side of it as much as I paid attention to the social aspects of it. Studio, like Tommy says, is something that not many people will get to experience and I feel as though we're lucky to have our own spaces, even though it may be stressful at times. I tried to capture the uniqueness of studio in my layout, and however sucessful I was...I had fun along the way.

pencil box

Although the lid to my pencil box really doesn't shut, whatsoever, I am still pleased with everything else on the box. In fact, I kind of like the top not closing because I can get my pencils whenever I want to and not waste time with opening it. By the time this box was completed, in all honesty, I was completely fed up with the entire project and didn't have much concern for the top.

My contour drawings could have been a lot better, but it was just so hot while I was drawing. The first sketch is probably my worst because it was done immediately after walking a LOT downtown and I was really in no mood. I don't have reasoning for why my others were bad but I know that I need to improve on patience and proportion.

First and second Foust contours

These are the contour drawings that we did on campus. It was incredibly hot that day and I was miserable. The bottom drawing is my first attempt, which looks rushed. I actually had less time to draw on my second try with this sketch, and I think it still looks better.

Andrea Joseph Review

I absolutely love Andrea Joseph's site and found her work inspiring. I really admire her talent not only in the way that she sketches but in her method of coloring as well. Her artwork seems to vary in style, but all are beautiful. My favorite piece of Andrea's work is "get miles away". It's not a completely accurate drawing, but her method makes the work appear soft and gentle, which is what stands out the most to me. Andrea's work makes me feel a lot better about not being perfect in everything I create. Some of my favorite pieces from her are exaggerated and have "messy" lines, which is similar to most of what I do...although mine aren't intentional.
